The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to hire a highway maintenance professional to serve as Highway Maintenance Lead. This position will provide direction and support to safely coordinate highway maintenance activities for their team. This experienced technician leads by example and has a personal commitment to safety while working actively with their crew to perform required maintenance on state highways in close proximity to high-volume, high-speed traffic. Along with the proven ability to fill in as the supervisor during the Maintenance Supervisor’s absence, we need someone to take ownership and use experience with technology for completing daily reports of events that occur.

Due to the nature of this work, the Highway Maintenance Lead must also be able to perform hard, physical labor such as moving and transporting heavy objects, negotiating rough and steep terrain, working in confined spaces, operating heavy equipment, and working in extreme weather conditions. By taking on this role, you are serving a key and vital function to the State of Washington.


What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Lead will:

Lead and direct a crew responsible for specific subsection of state highway that performs highway, roadway, infrastructure, and right-of-way maintenance and repair.
Patrol and inspect assigned section of roadway in high volume traffic area, performing traffic control operations.
Maintain an accurate database log of all maintenance work completed within assigned area.
Assists in planning and prioritizing work, determining how work is to be safely performed with minimal impact to traveling public.
Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of assigned equipment.
Act as a first responder on accident and emergency scenes.
Participate in safety meetings and ensure safe operations of work duties, including developing and carrying out pre-activity safety plans and using appropriate personal protection equipment.
Train and mentor new employees on safe operations.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 or Maintenance Specialist 3; or two (2) years’ experience as a Maintenance Technician 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2 or equivalent combination of experience.
Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with endorsement “N” and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.
Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
Experience providing outstanding customer service.
Experience in working independently and prioritizing workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
Experience using computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Products.
Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
Ability to perform duties low to the ground or at ground level, duties at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
Ability to perform manual labor and operate machinery and equipment and to climb ladders.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time and traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent Understanding of TEF owned equipment.
Three (3) years of experience in one of the following job classes: Highway Maintenance Worker 2, Bridge Maintenance Technician 2, or Maintenance Specialist 2. Possession of a Plans Reading Certification.
At least one (1) year of experience operating and transporting equipment.
Experience operating vehicles weighing 26,000 GVW.
Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
Backflow Prevention Tester Certification.
Crane Certificate.
Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card

The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
