JOB DESCRIPTION
Bus Mechanic
Minimum Qualifications:
▪ Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, power trains, powertrain and body control
system, transmissions, air, electrical, hydraulic systems and differentials.
▪ Knowledge of electrical systems utilizing electrical current and circuit testing machines
as required.
▪ Knowledge of electrical systems utilizing schematics area tools (with or without the
benefit of troubleshooting trees).
▪ Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the
automotive and mechanical trade.
▪ Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems relation to the safe and effective operation
of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment.
▪ Knowledge of safety standards, laws, codes, and terminology, rules and regulations for
school buses and other types of motorized vehicles and equipment preferred.
▪ Ability to work under vehicles, operates lifts, and automated fluid controls.
▪ Ability to read, interpret, follow blueprints, work orders, drawings, sketches, schematics
and specifications, maps and other written directions or documents.
▪ Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work, maintain records and logs with accuracy.
▪ Ability to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and maintain established time
schedules.
▪ Ability to communicate effectively in a courteous and professional manner with all levels
of staff, community members and contractors/vendors.
▪ Ability to communicate via two-way radio system.
▪ Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
▪ Ability to learn and use various computer software programs pertaining to position.
▪ Possess and maintain knowledge of the rules and laws of the road.
▪ Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and in a team environment.
▪ Must be able to change routine on a short notice.
▪ Must be in good physical health.
▪ Must be able to operate motor vehicles, maintain bench and hand tools, other power
equipment, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe,
efficient manner.
▪ Must be organized and dependable.
▪ Physical ability to perform heavy outside work in all types of weather.
▪ Flexibility to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data
utilizing defined and similar processes.
▪ Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data;
and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with others, some
problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem
solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving
with equipment is significant.
▪ Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include
adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting
deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; and working independently and with
interruptions.
▪ Ability to perform tasks in other fields; and perform other tasks as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
▪ Overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions, both automatic and manual, and
differentials.
▪ Repair and rebuild electrical components, including alternators and starters, utilizing
electrical current and circuit testing machines as required.
▪ Repair and rebuild brake systems including both hydraulic and air equipped vehicles.
▪ Welding as required using both gas and electric welders.
▪ Verify operational safety of equipment and devices and make any necessary repairs
where necessary.
▪ Maintain assigned tools and equipment. Maintain department inventory of safety
equipment (i.e. harnesses, car seats, wheel chairs, etc.)
▪ Provide input for the most appropriate manner of repair, replacement, modification, or
new installation work considering cost, timelines, and equipment and applicable county,
state, and federal codes.
▪ Change air filters, lube motors, change drive belts and clean fan coils.
▪ Prioritize and organize time and resources.
▪ Monitor operations on a routine basis and assist the Transportation Director in identifying
and evaluating maintenance needs for a planned maintenance program.
▪ Assist in the analysis of preventative maintenance inspection findings and causes of
failure; offer suggestions for correction.
▪ Assist in determining and recommending modifications to work practices or preventative
maintenance frequencies.
▪ Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise. Identify and request training to maintain
skills relevant to changing technology and codes.
▪ Follow Washington State Laws, district policies and procedures and directions of
supervisor regarding routes, stops, and operation of vehicle for the purpose of ensuring
compliance with same.
▪ Resolve conflict in a proactive, problem-solving manner.
▪ Foster and maintain strong productive relationships with district employees, vendors and
contractors, and other community members.
▪ Communicate a positive image of the employer.
▪ Uphold East Valley School Board Policies, follow administrative procedures, adhere to
the Code of Professional Conduct, and enforce school rules.
▪ Other duties as assigned
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
1. Valid Washington State driver’s license and Evidence of Insurability.
2. Valid Washington State Driver’s License and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with
proper endorsements. Possession of or ability to obtain Bus Driver Authorization for the
State of Washington according to WAC 392-144-102 (WAC 180-20).
3. Valid First Aid Card.
Education and Experience:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Minimum of two (2) years job related experience within specialized field required.
